I am definitly not in New Orleans anymore

Yesterday I went out for drinks with people after work. It was really nice. That was one of the things that was missing from my previous few jobs. I think its really nice to see people out of the office and to get to know them better on a personal level. We went to this place called Red Robin or something. Its kinda like a Friday's. So the funny thing was when one of my co-workers ordered a drink, the waiter said "I am sorry, but according to corporate policy, I am only allowed to serve you 3 drinks" WHAT!?!?! I totally thought he was kidding, but he was very serious. Its not like we were taking shots or anything. Everyone was sipping on their drinks over a few hours, so no one was drunk by any means. Eventually, they were able to talk him into serving them, since they go there all the time and the manager approved or whatever. But it was very crazy and it really made me miss New Orleans because those words would have never been uttered there.

Today I started my new job at Safeway (its a grocery store chain) I am a business analyst trainee. I will be in training for 8 weeks and then they throw us into the "real world". Its a pretty cool opportunity. This is my first time that I am in such a corporate environment. There are so many rules and policies and security and stuff. Today I got a security badge that I have to wear at all times and I had to watch a sexual harassment video. Corporate videos rule!! And there is a cafeteria in the building. And the dress code is pretty strict. Like the guys have to wear ties and stuff. Its all very "Office Space". But everyone I met so far seems really nice. There are six of us in this training program and we all kinda stuck together all day and bonded and stuff, so that was pretty cool. Anyways, I am just excited to finally have a job after months of unemployment. So now I am going to start looking for an apartment. Yay!!!

Yesterday I participated in a race here in San Francisco called Bay to Breakers. Its a 7.5 mile (12K) race from the bay to the ocean(hence the name). Its sorta similar to the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans. There were LOTS of people in costumes and rolling kegs around and stuff. There was even a tikki bar on wheels. The atmosphere reminded me of Mardi Gras. I heard that it gets pretty crazy, but I was not prepared for what I saw. There were a bunch of naked men everywhere. And they were not hot studly guys. We kept seeing this one guy everywhere and he kept dancing and waving his thing around. It was so disturbing. It was so crazy. I think I saw more penis yesterday than I ever have in my whole life.

This past weekend I went to a crawfish boil. Yes a crawfish boil out here in SF! It all started with myspace. I got a message from a a girl that I was friends with in high school (Melissa Reagan - some of you know her), but haven't kept in touch since. It turns out that she has been living in SF for almost two years. That weekend her dad was in town and they flew in live crawfish and had a real crawfish boil. It was so great. And it was really great to catch up with her also. Its so hard to make friends and its nice when you can reconnect with an old one.

hiking and farmers tan

Yesterday I went hiking (people actually do that out here). I went with Lenny (the BF). He is really into hiking and outdoors-y stuff. I always thought that in theory I was really into it too and that the only reason that I never did these things back in New Orleans was that I had no one to go with because no one I knew liked to do that stuff. Now I realize that I was just a lazy ass, because now that I have someone to go with I still don't ever feel like going. Well I am trying to get into it now. There are so many beautiful places around here to go that its a shame to not take advantage of that. Actually, now that I think about it, I am like that with a lot of things (ex. bowling or playing pool). I think I like something in theory but then when I get the opportunity to do it, I don't really want to and I need to be talked into it. But then once I am there, I actually like it. I don't know why I am that way. I should look into that. Anyways...I digress...

So we went to this place called Mt. Tamalpais (Mt. Tam as all the cool people here call it) Its in Marin (North of the city). Lenny has been trying to get me to go there for a while, but I was hesitant because 1) I am a lazy ass and 2) He has been telling me how hard it is and that half of it is all uphill so I was really scared because I am way out of shape. So finally we went and it was actually really nice. We hiked down to Stinson Beach and sat on the beach for a while and then hiked back up. It was a little over 6 miles. I will be outdoors-y before you know it.

So the only bad part is that I got the most ridiculous framers tan. The weather was really nice and there was a nice breeze, so I didn't realize how sunny it was. I should have had a clue because I saw others putting on sunscreen. I also have gotten sunburned many times before and I always vow "Never again!", but I still never think about sunscreen. So here is the description of my tan/burn:
-my face is all red, but one cheek is redder than the other (as if my cheeks need to get any redder)
-I have the lines from my sunglasses on the side of my face (again one side is more noticeable than the other)
-one side of my neck is burned
-my arms, but just between my wrists and elbows and only on top (I was wearing a t-shirt)
-my legs, but only between the middle of my calf to the ankle (capri pants)

It is so stupid looking. I have gotten farmers tans before, but for some reason, this is the most ridiculous one ever. I think its the arms.

So lessons learned:
Hiking at Mt. Tam - good
T-shirt and Capri pants and sun - bad
Sunscreen - good

Hal Sparks and Gogol Bordello

I had an awesome weekend! Friday night I went to Cobb's Comedy club to see Hal Sparks. He is HILARIOUS. He is the guy from all the I love the 80's and 90's shows on VH1 and he is one of the funniest guys on there. He was also on Queer as Folk. Interesting observations about seeing him in person: 1. He is a little guy. He is like my height or maybe even shorter and he is skinny. 2. He claims that he doesn't drink or smoke or do drugs or anything and that he has never had an alcoholic beverage in his life. 4. He is from Kentucky. 3. I sorta caught the gay vibe from him, but he talked about girls in his act, but I guess that doesn't really mean anything. On the other hand, my gay-dar is not the most accurate, so who knows. Anyways, he was so funny and quite cute despite of his small stature. Loved him!

Then Sunday night, I went to see this band called Gogol Bordello. They are a Russian Jewish Gypsy Punk Band from New York and they were awesome!!! It was my first show in San Francisco, so that was cool too. It was at this place called Slim's and it was a pretty nice venue. I guess its sorta similar to Howlin' Wolf. Anyways, the band was crazy. It was like a huge party on stage. There was a violin and an accordion and the washboard instrument thing (i don't know the name, but they use in zydeco music). Just crazy stuff and people from the audience would go up and dance on the stage. It was just really fun. Two bands opened up for them: Zox and Kultur Shock. They were pretty cool too. Kultur Shock was pretty crazy too. Some of the members are from Croatia and their music has like a middle eastern flavor to it.

So, yay for me for taking advantage of this city :)

I am trying to convince everyone to move here. Lets see...what has been going on...
I was working for a while but it really sucked so I am taking some time off and trying to figure out what I want to do. I bought a new car. Its the new honda civic. I love my car. Its so cute. Its my new baby. I have been exploring the city and trying to get to know all the different areas. Its awesome. I have been doing a lot of jewish social activities. That's been pretty cool. I have met some really nice people. So things are really good! I really miss the ole' gang a lot though. That's why I am trying to get everyone to move here. haha

I think that pretty much sums up the last few months.
Wow, I have not posted in a long time. Reading some of my older posts feels like a lifetime ago. Well, I am hanging out in houston for now. I have been able to work here which is good because i am getting income, but bad because I hate my job and I am not in the mood to deal with the bullshit. I have been living in a hotel room with my family which has been an experience in itself. I just feel really weird because I have been on my own for the past year and a half and now I am back with my family and it makes me feel like a kid or something. I am gratefull for their help but i miss my independence. Like I have to ask to use the car and the other day I got dropped off at the mall by my dad to meet some friends :) Oh and speaking of cars... I left my car parked outside of my parents house in metairie and it flooded. My parents house had about a foot of water in it and pretty much everything is covered in mold. I dont even want to talk about my apartment in lakeview. According to the google satellite website it had about 9 feet of water. So I am not very hopeful about salvaging anything. Anyways, I don't want to sound so down. I know that I am in a much better situation than a lot of other people and I am very greatfull for that. The only thing that is exciting is that I am probably going to move to San Francisco in the next few months! It has been my dream to live there for a long time and now is the perfect time to take that chance since i don't really have anything to lose. Well, I hope that everyone is doing well. This is still so surreal!

I was running around and dancing and making faces at the camera and always waving at the camera. I was one of those annoying kids that wanted to be the center of attention. Its just so weird to see myself like this because this is so not who I am anymore. I was so happy and not self conscious at all and just totally oblivious to my surroundings and totally comfortable in my own skin. Its just weird because I don't even remember myself like that. It was like watching someone else. Like watching this cute, outgoing kid running around and having a great time. It was also weird to see my parents and all their friends look so young too. It was also weird to see people that are no longer around, especially my grandma. She looked so young and she had her hair all fixed. She was also doing some dancing. It was so cute. It was just weird because she was so sick for so long that I have forgotten what she was like before she got sick. It was really cute to see my brother too. He was 15 at the time. I have seen many pictures from that time, but it was just weird to see a video, to see how everyone was acting and to hear people's voices. Watching the video made me think about growing up. How it just happens, you get older and smarter and you change. You get self conscious and you try to be cool or whatever. Its kinda cliche, but I wish you can just hang on to that innocence.

I was running really late this morning and I accidentally wore flip flops to work. Oops! At least its Friday which is sorta a casual day.

My family has been out of town for two weeks on a fabulous vacation. I really miss them even though I don't live with them anymore and sometimes I don't see them for two weeks even when they are in town. I have been house sitting their house and after 2 weeks it is starting to look like my apartment (For those who haven't seen my apartment lately, its really messy.) The best thing about this is that they have this awesome huge tv and they have like all the movie channels and all the "on demand" channels. Its been great catching up on movies. If I had that at my apartment, I don't think I would ever leave. But they will be back on Tuesday, so the movie watching fun will end, but I will be happy to see them. I really gotta clean up this weekend.

Hmm..Lets see what else...Last weekend I went to jazz fest. It was really nice. The weather was amazing!! I got a little sunburned - no surprise. I tried these things called popousas(sp?). Its these fried tortilla things served with picled cabbage - sounds weird but its soooo yum! I was told its from El Salvador. I can't wait to eat them again. There is supposed to be a good place out in Kenner that serves them - must try!

<lj:music>The muffled silence of my office</lj:music>

Monday was the Jimmy Eat World concert at house of blues. I am not like obsessed with them or anything, but I really like them. On a whim, I bought two tickets last minute (I think that I just got excited that it wasn't sold out yet - which it did later) Anyway, since it was so last minute, I couldn't find anyone to go with. All day Monday I was trying to get people to come with me. I left messages for everyone who I thought may tolerate their music and no one was able to go or they weren't returning my calls. I was getting pretty bummed out about it, I was regretting buying the tickets and I was even considering going by myself or not going at all. Finally I called my friend Annette, who I didn't think would go, but I was getting desperate and to my surprise she said she'll go. So we went and we had a great time! We got to talk and catch up while the opening bands were playing. (One of the bands that opened for them was called Elephant, they sounded pretty good, I am going to have to check out their cd) Then we saw the show. It was really good. They played all the songs that I wanted to hear. Annette seemed to really enjoy it too which was great because I would not have enjoyed it as much if I was with someone who really didn't want to be there. After we went to the Balcony (good ole' Balc) and got some pizza. It was just a really nice evening and it was even better because it was starting out so badly. So the lesson here kids, is that a lot of times thing just sorta work out on their own and for the best.

Today we toilet papered my boss's office. Since its the day before a holiday, there was only like 5 people in the office. The receptionist accidentally ordered tp instead of paper towels, so there were a bunch of rolls by her desk. We were kinda mad that the boss left early but didn't tell us that we could leave early. (We usually do the day before a holiday) Anyway we were only going to do a little bit, but we kinda got carried away. It looks really funny. Hopefully I will still have a job on Monday :) It was worth it though. Those few minutes actually made my job bearable for a change. I hope I am here when he first sees his office.

This weekend was so much fun! My cousin got married this weekend. This was my first time being a bridesmaid. Although it does get expensive and at times overwhelming, being a bridesmaid is really fun. Thursday night was the bachelorette party. It started out at my house and then we took a limo to the quarter. I bought feather boas for everyone and now I have white feathers all over my place. It looks like I’ve been killing chickens. The rehearsal was Friday night and the wedding was Saturday. During the day on Saturday, all the bridesmaids and the mothers hung out in bathrobes in this HUGE suite at the hotel. We got our hair and make up done and got ready and stuff. That was pretty cool. The ceremony was short and to the point which was good because my feet were already killing me by this point. The groomsman that I had to walk with was totally shit faced and spent most of the reception throwing up in the bathroom. The reception was really fun. The shoes came off about 10 minutes into it. The champagne was really good and my glass was magically refilling the whole time. There was a live band which was really fun. I danced my ass off and anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE to dance! I caught the bouquet which was also a first for me. So watch out, I’m getting married next! After the wedding I met up with my crew at Rendezvous for a drink. That was really nice because I felt like with all the wedding stuff going on, I haven’t seen my friends in like a month. So that was my really fun weekend! I can’t wait till one of my close friends gets married! That will be even more fun! I will post some pics as soon as I get i get some.

This is exactly what I mean about editing my stories for different people. I am sure most people don't give a shit about half the details that are in that story. <lj:music>internet radio 90s alternative station - love it!</lj:music>

Last night was quite interesting. I went to get coffee with Aaron and Kristi at Terrytown Cafe. For those of you who don't know what that is, its this shitty donut shop on the westbank with a quite interesting array of customers. Its pretty cool to go there when you just want to sit and talk and have a stale donut. Anyway, I left there around 10 and I found out that Prachi and Jen were at the Balcony (without me!) so I had to meet them for a drink. Just one...

So we are just sitting and talking and then these guys start talking to us and they were pretty nice but sorta obnoxious! Somehow we started talking about astrology and apparently one of the guys was really into it. He did have me pretty pegged when I asked him about aquarius characteristics. It was kinda weird, but I don't even know if I believe all that.

So then I see a guy that I went to high school with. He was actually two years younger but he was like crazy smart. (He was in my calculus class when I was a senior and he was a sophomore and now he is in med school) I always thought that he was pretty cute and we have the same birthday which at the time I thought was really cool (OK - I still think thats cool cuz I am a dork!)

So I caught up with him for a few moments and then they (him and his friend) went inside. I was getting pretty aggravated with the other guys that were talking to us because they kept messing with us and bull-shitting us and stuff. It was funny at first but then it got stupid.
So a few minutes later I went inside to use the bathroom and I ran into high school guy and his friend so I just stayed and talked to them till like 3:30 am until they kicked us out of the bar (on a week night!).

I felt really bad that I abandoned Prachi and Jen and even the annoying guys because they were buying us drinks and I kinda felt like a bitch
because after I ran into high school guy, i totally ignored them and I didn't even tell them bye or anything. Oops.

But I really enjoyed talking to high school guy and his friend. He is still really cute and he is so freakin' smart! The bad thing is that we didn't exchange numbers or anything so I might never see him again. I should have just asked him for his number dammit!! Well maybe we'll run into each other again. This is actually the second time that I ran into him at a random place - maybe its fate! Maybe it was giving me one more chance and I didn't take it - why did I not ask for his number!!!!!.
I am not even sure if I would really want to date him, but I think it would have been cool to stay in touch with him. Plus, maybe he could introduce me to his med school friends :)
Oh and the suckiest part is that I looked like total crap! I was only coming out for ONE drink I didn't feel like going home
to change! Ugh! I am never leaving the house again unless I look presentable!

So this morning I was super late for work. It was horrible!
I need a louder alarm because I slept right through it and that thing goes off for like 2 hours!

So I am starting this journal thing. This is sorta weird. I never thought I would actually do this, but here I am. So lets see....hmm....whats new? Well I guess a big thing is that I just got a brand new computer! That's actually the reason that I am doing this or I am actually able to do this. I guess I didn't really need to get one since I sit in front of a computer for 8 hours a day at work, but I have a tendency to splurge. So now I can stay up late and tool around on my new toy. Tonight was fun with the scanner night. Even though I am a computer programmer, I am not very computer literate which is weird, but I have never actually used a scanner before. I had no idea there are many options, but I think I got the basic hang of it. When I get some more pictures scanned, I will try to post some on my journal. Um...what else? I ate sushi tonight! Yay! I love sushi. Its so yummy especially with great company! See this is why I was hesitant about starting this journal thing - I am so freakin' boring. I guess I am just warming up.

I made one entry...it was public for like a day and then I made the entry private. I just freaked out about it. I guess I just feel weird posting something for others to read and not knowing who has read it. I also figured out that I really like to edit events in my life differently for different people. I might give more detail to some people or leave some things out for others. Its not necessarily that I am keeping secrets from people...its just that i know that some people will actually tolerate listening to all my lengthy detailed stories and some people only need to hear the abridged version.
